H:You have so many good lines. Were those all written that way or how much did you have improvise? I know you said some of the dialogue when you walk around as the character with some of the small lines like that. But in the actual scripted event and stuff,How much was that you playing around with the character?

你有很多非常精彩的台词,它们都是白纸黑字写在剧本上还是有一些是其实你即兴创作出来的的?正如你所说的,当玩家操控或四处探索时,角色会说一些比较简短的台词,这些台词是真的写在剧本上,还是有多少是你按照角色的实际情况即场发挥的?

 

J:I mean there was definitely some. We definitely did something. But i have to say that when you get handed with a really good writing. I am always comfortable to improvise but it is also just as freeing in a way to get a really great script and I know and full credit to the writers. Because I had total permission to play if it seemed appropriate and I think that’s something as an actor you never want to abuse but no. I mean the writer is that a lot, most of that stuff was all the writers. I mean they nail it. They really like created a really great script and I think even like rewrite, they would make on a fly I think. Again as you get on set and you start playing. They are watching the footage and see the interaction. I think they were also nimble and might shift some dialogue a little bit. Because not it felt more in line with how this character was really starting to flesh itself out.

有一些确实是即场发挥的。当有一个好的剧本的时候,我不会对即场发挥感到抗拒,临场发挥的自由度正是基于一个好的剧本,所以其实所有的功劳都归于编剧。在演绎角色时,我们的确被允许就剧情是否符合实际而做出一些微调,但作为一名演员,不应该将这些功劳都揽到自己身上。剧本非常的重要,成功的大部分因素都是来由于一个好的编剧,他们简直就是妙笔生花。他们创作出一流的故事,即使有需要重新编排的地方,也是短时间内就能完成修改的事。在片场拍摄时,编剧亦会在一旁观看拍摄片段,观察演员之间的互动等。他们亦会当场对台词或剧本作出一些灵活的调整。因为台词必须要与角色性格贴合,才能让角色活灵活现。

 

H: Yeah, make sense. There is always rewrites as whether it is a scene or like you said they had an idea of what the character was until you guys started filming it. And then your character evolved through the acting to be like...

说得有道理,通常遇到某一些场景,或者像你说的,开拍后他们才又对角色产生了另一种解读,这种情况下便会对剧本进行修改,随着剧情的发展,角色也会...

 

J:And also sometimes like a line doesn’t work because of nothing other than practically. It is like whatever the line is, it doesn’t work now because physically onstage Jill is way over there. So for me to say this intamin line here now doesn’t make sense. We didn’t realized that as we built the set out and staged it that we were going to be so far apart. So there’s always a bit of nimble storytelling that has to occur when you are working with something as like live is this.  

有时候一些对白结合到当时的实际情况,就会变得不适用。就像可能某一句台词,因为在拍摄现场,吉尔其实离我很远,若果按照当时的实际情况,这句台词就会变得不合理,我们搭建片场和舞台的时候也没有意识两个角色距离双方原来是这么远的。所以拍摄期间,很多时候要按照现场的情况对故事的细节进行灵活的调整。

 

H:Earlier we talked about some of the other roles that you have done and things that you are getting into like Captain America for Marvel’s Avengers. For the game coming out here soon and we kind of talked about stepping into an established character and taking the reins of them. Did you have any kind of reservation or what were you really thinking to take on someone like Captain America that in the last 10 years to become this huge figure. Like Icon.

J:I guess it is safe to say, at the onset there was definitely that moment of like “Wow that is what those are some big boots to fill ” but again I quickly sort of realized it is gonna have to be my take on it. That’s the only way it will work. But you can’t help but feel the weight of something of that magnitude while at same time feeling very honored to be a part of it and then the kid in you is totally geeked out about about it. So it was very exciting. I definitely had like, there was definitely some nerves about it but it was really outweighed by how excited I was to be able to be a part of that. 

可以这样说,在片场的时候的确有那么一刻会“哇,这真是任重而道远啊。”但很快我就意识到,我必须要承担起这个角色并将他呈现到众人眼前,这是唯一的出路。但你仍然会感觉到这是一个重任,不过同时亦会感到非常荣幸能够成为这其中的一员,你内心的小孩也会因此非常激动。是的,的确是非常焦虑和紧张,但能够参入到如此伟大的项目当中,这一切所带来的兴奋足以将不安的情绪掩盖。

 

H:So I was thinking is it probably has to go from nervous to excited. But like I get to be Captain America.

从紧张不安变成兴奋期待,就像“我可以成为美国队长!”

 

J:Yeah I mean for sure. And then you have to get brave pretty quick. Like you confidence in your ability to do it or at least to make a decision and know like this is my choice and I own it. Whether it works or it doesn’t work. I see it in the way that I feel about it. These are the parts of his personality. I want to push through and then run full speed ahead with it. 

是啊,然后很快就要进入角色,去相信自己有能力演绎好这个角色,以及做出一些决定,就像“这条路是我选的,我必须要走好。”不论成功与否,我会用自己的方式去感受和演绎这一个角色,那都是角色性格的一部分。我想要全力以赴地演好这个角色。

 

H:I think we are all really looking forward to that game. I know when it was announced a long time ago, the rumor of it, I was pretty excited. You know Marvel and everything. Right now they are extremely successful. We are seeing their movies several times a year. We all love the extended MCU. So to see that they were making a game after what they have done with the movies was pretty awesome. We are really looking forward to it. We will see hot it turns out.

J: Yeah. I am excited for that one to release. I really am.

H:Talking about personality and our character. Is there anything that you took from your from your character. You know, you hold as part of yourself now or something that you really appreciate a bit about one of your characters you played. Whether it is Carlos or Cap or whoever. But a little bit of Carlos in this situation.

说到角色和性格,你有没有从角色的身上学到些什么?将他们的优良品质化作自己的一部分,或者你有没有非常欣赏某个角色的性格?可以是卡洛斯,也可以是美国队长或任何你饰演过的角色,但这次就聊聊卡洛斯吧。

 

J:I think part of one of the things that i loved about Carlos was he had an optimism about him and I just really liked that guy had a clear sense of right and wrong and that the way that distilled itself down onto a personal level. Like people really matter to him. And for me, i love that because I don’t know more eloquent way to say this, but i really like people I think. I think you have to try to find the good in people and as I have gotten older my ability to access my own compassion has really changed a lot. So I really like that about Carlos and honestly the other thing for me that I really feel like I share with him is that real like laid-back sort of vibe where you can’t take anything too too seriously and no matter how bad the situation is, you gotta try to eject a little humor in it. 

我非常欣赏卡洛斯的乐观主义,他明辨是非,并将此细化为个人层面的事,平民百姓的安全对他来说是首要的。就我个人来说,我不知道应该怎么去表达,但其实就是对人的一种关怀,要尝试去看到人性中美好的一面,随着年龄增长,我在共情和怜悯这一方面有了不少长进,所以我非常欣赏卡洛斯这种性格。说实话,我感觉自己和他一样处事泰然,无论情况有多糟糕,总不能把自己绷得太紧,用幽默来为自己解困。

 

H: Yeah for sure. And they do that, both of you. I kind of feel all of the characters have a you know, Tyrell is pretty serious. He’s got a little bit of comedy in there. The guy has a few bits. And we don’t really get to see Murphy, but for like 5 seconds, but his journal made him sound like a interesting guy. But between Jill and Carlos, it walks a good line between adding a little bit of that light-heart comedy with the back-and-forth banter between you two or her off-the-wall remarks in this really despairing setting, just this apocalypse.

是的,卡普空对角色的塑造都拿捏得很到位,我感觉所有的角色都带这一点有趣的地方。像泰瑞尔虽然有时候比较严肃,但他偶尔也有一点喜剧元素。我们对摩菲了解得不多,大概也就5秒左右的片段,但从他的日记看来,也是蛮有趣的一个人。但吉尔和卡洛斯的交流总是带着一种轻喜剧式的来回调侃,以及她那些逗趣的话,这些诙谐的对白和那种令人绝望的末世环境之间保持着微妙的平衡。

 

GH:People are literally dying around you. But you guys do a good job of breaking that tension and keeping us invested and not just putting the weight on our shoulders the whole time of seeing all those horrible stuff. They give the one-liners and it keeps it light in a way.

在周围的人都快要没命了的环境之下,你们的互动打破了那一种紧张感,让玩家可以投入其中,而不仅仅是一直看着那些可怕的事情,把重担全部放在玩家的肩上。他们的俏皮话让整个游戏变得不那么沉重。

 

J: In some way for me, like there’s part of Resident Evil 3 that almost feel like a really great 80s or 90s action movie. It almost got a little bit of that retro feel and you need that. I think actually those kind of moments actually lend themself beautifully, like horror storytelling or apocalyptic storytelling. You need that moment of levity. You need that moments like “Oh OK, you know I can take a break ” to just ease off some of that tension. And if you do that for an audience, if you drive tension back it off a little bit, then you can drive it harder again. You can push it even further.

某种程度上,我感觉一部分的RE3剧情有点像8090年代的动作电影。有那么一点点复古的感觉,而那也正是我们所需要的。我觉得那几幕其实设置得非常到位,像恐怖故事或末世故事中,你需要一些让你回过神来的时间,就像“哦,好吧,我可以休息一下”用那些时间来缓解一下紧张的情绪。作为一名玩家或观众,如果制作方能把游戏中的紧张的气氛稍微缓和一下,之后再下一幕又再让玩家变得紧张起来,这一种紧张的情绪会更加高涨。

 

H:That’s a good point. And you see that throughout the game. It just keeps up in the level in between the cut scenes. But it is the tension is there when nemesis is chasing you when you are in a horrible environment and there are things after you. But then it brings it right back to Jill and Carlos kind of breaking down that moment again. Like you said, it adds the levity to it, so you can kind of breath again. And then get ready for the next level which is gonna be even more intense.

说得对,在整个游戏的过程中都可以感受到这一点,CG场景切换可以让紧张感始终保持在同一水平。当你身处可怕的环境中,当复仇女神在追你的时候,紧张感就一下子出来了,而且还有很多其他的敌人在追你。但之后又切回吉尔和卡洛斯那边,就像你说的,他们让你稍微放松一下,先松一口,然后又把你扔进下一场更激烈的战斗当中。

 

J:Yeah, the other thing I like which I always thought was cool about the relationship between Carlos and Jill was I like that you always feel this sort of spark of a connection between them but they don’t turn it into a love story. 

另外,卡洛斯和吉尔之间的关系,也是我觉得非常酷的一件事。我喜欢那种,你可以感受到他们之间是有火花的,但卡普空没有把他们写成爱情故事。

 

GH:No they don’t. They show that it is there and they kind of do that with a lot of those series. A lot of the characters there is always a hint of romance. Just because the chemistry is so strong between those two characters and then they leave it at that usually.

是的,卡普空对待人物感情总是支吾其词,若有似无。但基本上这个系列中的人物关系都是这样处理的,很多的角色之间都隐隐约约有一点浪漫元素,仅仅是因为两个角色的化学反应实在是太强了,但之后又总是不了了之。

 

J: You know you are in a situation where your life is in somebody’s hand, where you were in this incredibly intimate harrowing situation. But I love the way they handled that. Because I thought it was great that you could feel it, sense it maybe it is there. Would that be something in another world? But they didn’t hammer it over the head.

在那个环境之下,你的生死就在另一个人的手上,你与她一同突破地狱般的困境,这让二个人紧密地联系在一起。但我喜欢他们这种处理感情线的方式,你会感受到或者察觉到那份感情或许就在那里,或许在另一个宇宙会对他们有一个交代,但卡普空从不会将这些感情说成是铁板钉钉上的事。

 

H: It worked nicely. You guys said your chemistry together was perfect for the character. They matched so well too. What we expected to see from them, from what the original established. Jill still keeping her armor up basically until she gets to a point where she knows she can trust him and even then she’s still playing back with it. But you see after he saves her again later in the game, that she kind of lets that armor down and she is willing to be like “Okay, this is a good guy, we are gonna get through this together. ”Might be something there. But that will come later. 

这种处理非常的微妙,演员之间的化学反应对于这两个角色来说简直是完。我们期待可以再次见到他们。哪怕从原版的设定说起,吉尔对卡洛斯的戒心一直都很重,直到某一个点,她知道自己可以信任他,但她仍然没有放下戒备,直到在游戏后期,卡洛斯救了她,她才彻底放下戒心“好的,他是个好人,我们会一起离开这里。”所以,或许他们之间是有点什么,但那都是之后的事。

 

J:It takes her a little time to warm up to me.

她对我比较慢热。

 

H:Yeah, but she gets there. Do you have any other projects? I mean we talked about the Marvel Avengers supposed to come out later in this year hopefully still. we will see how that goes, not anything else coming out? Things worth to be looking forward?

J:Yeah I mean there is one in particular. I mean there is few that I am working on which are still can’t talk about yet. But there is a game call Disintegration which I am really excited about and that is done by a company call V1 Interactvie and it is from Marcus Lido, who is one of the creator of Master Chief. I am really looking forward to it. It is like a dystopian sort of futuristic world was set with like where human beings are sort of integrated into robotic bodies and it is a first-person shooter. But it is really interesting take on and it is like brand-new gameplay style. They just lifted the embargo on some of the stuff. So there’s been a lot of articles coming out over the last 48 hours. We are finally getting to talk about the single-player aspect of it. A little bit, they have been focusing a lot on the multiplayer. But I am excited about that project. I am really happy for that studio. And i think it is gonna be a great game. I am looking forward to seeing how it is.

的确有一个,其实有好几部都非常不错的作品,但我现在还不能说。但这个游戏叫Disintegration,我非常期待,是一家叫 V1 Interactvie的公司制作的,由Master Chief的制作人Marcus Lido监制。我真的非常期待这一款游戏,游戏背景设定在一个充满未来感的反乌托邦世界,人类由肉体和机械义肢组成,这是一款第一人称射击游戏。这一个角色的动作捕捉过程非常有趣,是一款有着全新风格的游戏。这款游戏刚刚解禁,在过去的48小时里已经有很多文章就这一款有戏发表了他们的看法。现在我们可以讨论单人玩家这一部分,他们亦一直在向多玩家模式的方向开发。我对这一个项目感到非常兴奋,同时也为这个游戏工作室感到开心,我想这会是一款非常棒的游戏,非常期待它的发布。

 

H:That sounds pretty interesting. It is the first time I have heard of them. I am gonna to look that up Disintegration.

GH:Pretty much again. I am like just fan- boying over like.....but one of the things like, this is another thing that, I don’t see a lot of people talking about when it comes to reviewing the game, so he’s seen a a lot of people and pretty negative about something and then obviously praising a lot of good thing and the two things that I know, I talked to Nicole about this, was her character is still going through like PTSD of when she was in the mansion in the first game. She was taking like sleeping pills and she’s being paranoid because watching her there was a follow, there was a continuation of what she went through and then Carlos as a character, he’s there to save the day, wants to save everybody then when he’s in the hospital obviously you don’t suppose you were there but he realized he’s on the wrong side, and they actually show that the fact that they had you act that of his realization, realizing what’s really going on and then that anger that builds up in them. That to me was like a great moment in the series entire. Like even the entire Resident Evil series. Because you had a character that is just discovering it, and then he continues with it. He’s like “I am working for the bad guys but I am still gonna save people.

其实我差不多就像个男粉丝坐在这一样…但是其中一点,我在看游戏评论的时候,好像很少有人注意到这一点。是这样的,卡洛斯见识过很多不同的人,或许会对人性感到失望,但很明显,他仍然会去相信人性中美好的地方。我和Nicole讨论过,她的角色还在经历创伤后应激障碍,经历过第一部的洋馆事件,她会服用安眠药,而且她很偏执多疑,因为有人监视她,跟踪她,这是她所经历过的事给她带来的影响。卡洛斯作为一个拯救他人的角色,他想救所有人。当他在医院的时候,当然不是从玩家角度出发,而是卡洛斯——这个角色意识到他站在错了一方,卡普空让你演出了那种,角色觉醒后,终于意识到周围的一切是如何发生的,愤怒在心中逐渐爆发的情绪。对我来说这是整个游戏中最精彩的一幕,乃至整个生化危机系列中最精彩的一幕。角色虽发现了整件事的真相,但他还是依然选择继续去完成自己的使命,他就像在说“即使我在被坏人当枪使,但我的首要任务还是先要救人。”

 

H: yeah I am here to save people and we will deal with that later type thing.

是的,他就是那种“我是来救人的,其他的事以后再说”的类型。

 

J:I think some of that is credit to again, like the writing team who was really keen on developing the character. You know i was talking to somebody just the other day and I was speaking about, you know, you really care about and where you get invested in is when you know why somebody’s doing something. And shooting zombies is fun I get it. I get it, it is super fun. At some point tho if you didn’t know why you were doing it, if you didn’t care about who was doing it. It would kind of get old, like all that stuff. You could only have so much, even like the best your favorite action movie from beginning you were a kid, at some point if there’s no death, blowing a bunch of stuff up, stops becoming interesting and fun. When you get to watch a character, you will have their heart, when you get to see them make these hard realization and have to re-evaluate everything they thought to be true in a five second period because their whole world got pulled out from underneath them and I think that’s the stuff that pulls you deeper into the story and actually makes the action richer. 

再一次,这些都归功于我们的编剧,他们非常热衷于深化角色。那天我也很其他人聊起这一点,只有当明白到角色为什么而战,玩家才会全身心地投入精力甚至感情。我懂,单纯射杀丧尸的游戏也非常好玩,但如果,在某一个点上,游戏没有主旨,你不知道自己的角色为什么而战,如果你不在乎角色本身,那所有的一切都会变得索然无味。人很快就会对这些高强度的动作元素感到厌倦,就像小时候你最爱看的动作电影,如果没有角色牺牲,一直只是拳打脚踢,奋身肉搏,那么很快就会变得无聊。当你看见一个角色,你会与他感同身受,当你看到他们醒悟过来,看到他们必须在短短的时间重新审视身边他以为是正确的一切,要知道那一刻,对于角色来说其实是翻天覆地的。我想正是这些人物细节将玩家深深地拉到故事之中,亦让单纯的动作游戏有更丰富的内容。

 

H:We can agree with that. They don’t really explore that too much in the original. That means there’s pieces of it but not to this extent. Where it’s taking a more serious approach and more developed, more fleshed out and giving Carlos a lot more character traits to him.

非常同意,在原版中他们没有去探索这一部分,我的意思是他们也有提到过这些,但没有继续去延伸。重制版更加认真地去对待这一部分,更深入更具体化,也让卡洛斯的人物特征更加丰满。

 

GH:Yeah I said MVP

H:So how’s the fan base been with you, have they pretty receptive, pretty happy with you. Have they reach out to you at least?

J:The resident evil fans are awesome, I mean they are like hardcord. I love it. I mean I really love it and I am always happy when someone reaches out and enjoy something. I am always like super excited to interact with them. Because a lot of times when I get to work on these games, I feel like a fan. So yeah, the community has been very receptive and super welcoming. I am really happy to be a part of that community and that universe now. And I hope we get to hang out together for a long time.

生化危机的粉丝简直一级棒,他们都是非常硬核的玩家,我很喜欢和他们交流。当有人和我说他们有多喜欢某一款作品时,我都会感到非常开心,亦很享受这一种交流,每一次和他们互动我都超级兴奋。是的,生化危机的粉丝都非常的热情友好。很荣幸自己可以成为生化宇宙中的一部分,希望以后仍有机会可以一起交流。

 

GH: I really hope so too. We are happy to have you. You did a incredible job as Carlos. You have given this character a new life and hopefully he gets to come back and we have said that before. But Capcom usually pretty good about rehiring the same people if they need them for another project or a similar project that falls in line with the character you played. So hopefully you have got your door open now with Capcom.

J:Truly whatever you know. Just want to say is a heartfelt appreciation. I really appreciate the support and the love and thank you guys for being so enthusiastic about it. It really does mean a lot. These are a lot of these project or labors of love and we don’t have privileged enough to get to work on them and really excited when we do and so to have it be received in this way and to have that feedback and that support about something. You guys are so passionate about it. It  means a lot. It really means a lot. And then to have a content creators like you guys doing what you are doing it is just awesome. It is great to be a part of and I feel like at a time when people can feel alone or stuck in their house or scared and stuff.I feel like these things can become a great escape and a great way to connect together.

H:I agree. This is a really strange time that we are living in this is something that I don’t think really any of us have ever lived through. Something like this at least. But luckily we live in a time where there are things to kind of keep us occupied and RE3 just happened to come out at a good moment for the fan base. He gave us something to play, distract us for a little bit, help us stay inside not go out and making the situation worse. So I gotta say I appreciate the company for at least putting out and I appreciate all of you for doing such an amazing job on this game.
